Rustito’s Dulces: Bringing a Sweet and Savory Mexican Tradition to Old Town

Old Town San Diego, known for its rich history and vibrant cultural scene, has a new gem adding to its tapestry of traditions: Rustito’s Dulces. This newly opened candy shop is not just a store; it’s a heartfelt homage to Mexican confections and the cherished memories they evoke.

A Dream Rooted in Sweet Memories

“I’m Olga Auclair, founder of Rustito’s Dulces, and candy crazed for all things that are fruity, sweet, and savory!” Olga’s eyes light up as she recounts her journey. “My love of this unique sweet/savory combination is what sparked a passion in me to build our online candy shop.”

Growing up in a close-knit Mexican American community, Olga’s childhood was painted with flavors and stories. “Some of my fondest memories were walking down to the corner store in hopes that I would find a full stock of Mazapán waiting for me!” she reminisces. The local family-owned shops knew her by name, fostering a sense of belonging and warmth that she now aims to replicate in her own establishment.

From Online Endeavors to Brick-and-Mortar Dreams

Initially launched as an online candy shop, Rustito’s Dulces quickly garnered a loyal following. The demand for authentic Mexican candies, combined with Olga’s personal touch in curating the selection, set the stage for expansion.

“Transitioning from online to a physical store was always a dream,” Olga shares. “Old Town San Diego felt like the perfect place. Its rich history and cultural significance resonate with the essence of Rustito’s Dulces.”

A Feast for the Senses

Walking into Rustito’s Dulces, visitors are greeted with a burst of colors and aromas. Shelves are adorned with an array of candies ranging from the beloved Mazapán to tamarind-infused treats. The store also offers savory delights, capturing the unique blend of flavors that Mexican confections are celebrated for.

Beyond the candies, the shop’s ambiance is designed to transport visitors to a traditional Mexican dulcería. Vibrant murals, handcrafted décor, and traditional music playing softly in the background create an immersive experience.

Building Community Through Sweetness

Olga’s vision extends beyond selling candies. She aims to recreate the community spirit she cherished during her upbringing. Regular events, tastings, and workshops are in the pipeline, aiming to engage both locals and tourists.

“At Rustito’s Dulces, we want everyone to feel like family,” Olga emphasizes. “Whether you’re revisiting childhood favorites or discovering these flavors for the first time, our doors are open to all.”
