Mark your calendars! The Old Town San Diego community is proud to announce the annual Mormon Battalion Parade and Community Event, happening on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
This beloved tradition commemorates the remarkable story of the Mormon Battalion, a group of 500 men who played a pivotal role in the history of the American West during the Mexican-American War. Their service in the mid-1800s left a lasting legacy, and this event celebrates their contributions in a meaningful and engaging way.
The day kicks off with a historic reenactment parade, bringing to life the battalion’s arrival in San Diego, complete with costumed participants and captivating entertainment. Following the parade, the celebration continues with a community event featuring:
- A Dutch oven cook-off, showcasing traditional recipes.
- Games and activities for all ages.
- Family-friendly entertainment and educational opportunities to connect with history.
Best of all, the event is free and open to the public, making it a perfect day out for locals and visitors alike.
“We are thrilled to host this annual event honoring the Mormon Battalion,” said Stan Kauffman, the event coordinator and President of the Mormon Battalion Historic Site. “It is a great opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the history and contributions of these brave soldiers.”
