Join the Pala Band of Mission Indians and the San Diego Unified School District’s Native American Education Program on March 18, 2023, for a day full of cultural celebration and education. This special day features two unique events that honor the history and traditions of Native Tribes in the San Diego area.
Antonio Garra Day is an annual event hosted by the Pala Band of Mission Indians and First San Diego Courthouse, Inc. to celebrate the life and legacy of the respected leader of the Cupeño people. Garra fought tirelessly for the rights of his people, and his bravery and dedication continue to inspire indigenous leaders to this day. The event will take place at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park from 11am-4pm and will include cultural performances, traditional bird singers, and educational exhibits about Antonio Garra and the Cupeño people. This is a family-friendly event that is open to all members of the community, providing an excellent opportunity to learn about the rich history and culture of the region.
In addition to Antonio Garra Day, the San Diego Unified School District’s Native American Education Program is hosting the Youth & Social Pow Wow at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center from 10am-8pm. This cultural event celebrates the ancestral history of various Native Tribes and is free and open to the public. Native Youth will learn and showcase traditional cultural dances and songs from their respective tribes, and visitors can expect to learn about the cultural traditions and history of San Diego’s first people. The Pow Wow will bring together Native communities from different parts of San Diego to celebrate their cultural heritage and to empower and support Native youth.
Whether you’re a long-time resident of San Diego or just visiting the area, March 18, 2023, is a date you won’t want to miss. Join us for a day of cultural celebration and education as we honor the life and legacy of Antonio Garra and empower Native youth through the Youth & Social Pow Wow.
