Historic Jail Cell Tours

August 24 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Free

Step back in time and experience a piece of San Diego’s storied past as the First San Diego Courthouse opens its historic jail cell for public viewing. On Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM, visitors will have a rare opportunity to step inside the 1850s jail cell, an event eagerly awaited since its last occurrence before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The First San Diego Courthouse, a cornerstone of Old Town’s rich heritage, holds countless stories within its walls. However, few spaces evoke the imagination quite like the historic jail cell. Constructed in the mid-19th century, this small yet significant cell was once used to detain individuals who ran afoul of the law in San Diego’s early days. The cell, typically closed to the public, offers a rare glimpse into the conditions faced by those held within its confines during a time when justice in the American West was swift and often severe.

This special reopening is more than just an opportunity to see a historic artifact; it’s an immersive experience that brings to life the challenges and realities of 19th-century law enforcement. As one of Old Town’s most popular attractions, the jail cell has drawn the curiosity of visitors young and old, eager to understand the past and connect with the lives of those who once lived in this vibrant community.

“We’re thrilled to offer this experience again after such a long hiatus,” said Garner Palenske, a spokesperson for the First San Diego Courthouse Museum. “The jail cell is one of our most talked-about exhibits, and we’re excited to welcome visitors back to explore this unique piece of San Diego’s history.”

Admission to the event is free, making it a perfect family outing or an educational experience for history enthusiasts. Visitors are also encouraged to explore the rest of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where a variety of shops, museums, and restaurants offer a full day of activities.

Don’t miss this chance to step inside a piece of San Diego’s past and experience history firsthand. Mark your calendars for August 24, 2024, and prepare to journey back to the 1850s at the First San Diego Courthouse’s historic jail cell.
