October 6 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Old Town San Diego, one of the region’s most historic and intriguing neighborhoods, is gearing up for a celebration that brings the past to life at the storied Whaley House Museum. This Sunday, October 6th, history enthusiasts and paranormal fans alike are invited to honor the 201st birthday of Thomas Whaley, the legendary entrepreneur whose name is synonymous with what many call “America’s Most Haunted House.”

Free Tours for Birthday Twins

If you share a birthday with Thomas Whaley, you’re in for a treat! Guests born on October 5th will receive complimentary admission to the Whaley House Day Tour from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. All you need to do is show a valid government-issued ID to step back in time and explore the iconic brick house that once served as San Diego’s 2nd County Courthouse, the county’s first commercial theater, and a bustling family home.

A Morning with the Author

Kick off the day with a special event at 10:00 AM: a fascinating book talk by Garner A. Palenske, author of The Whaley House, Past and Present. Held in the historic Whaley House courtroom, Palenske will delve into the rich history and eerie tales surrounding the property. After the presentation, attendees will have a chance to meet the author and get their books signed. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot by contacting the museum at [email protected].

Pugs, Pugs, and More Pugs!

Thomas Whaley’s legacy isn’t just about brick walls and ghost stories—he had a beloved four-legged companion, a pug named Chubby, who added a touch of joy to the family’s life. To honor Chubby’s memory, Pug Rescue of San Diego will be on the grounds from 10:30 AM with a pack of adoptable pugs! Visitors can meet, pet, and maybe even take home a new furry friend. Whether you’re a pug lover or just looking for a cuddle, this is a can’t-miss chance to make a lasting connection.

Meet Thomas Whaley Himself!

At 11:00 AM, the spirit of Thomas Whaley comes alive as a reenactor portraying the man of the hour will be available for photos. Ever wondered what it would be like to meet the patriarch of Old Town’s most famous family? Here’s your chance to capture a piece of history and snap a picture with “Thomas Whaley.”

Theatrical Thrills in the Whaley Theater

Step inside the Whaley House Theater at 12:00 PM for a brief monologue by Thomas Whaley himself. The character actor will share captivating anecdotes from the Whaley family’s storied past, offering a glimpse into what life was like during the early days of San Diego. This intimate performance is sure to add a dramatic flair to your visit.

Sweet Birthday Surprises

As the festivities continue, everyone is invited to partake in a birthday tradition—cupcakes! Starting at 12:45 PM, enjoy a sweet treat on the museum grounds, while supplies last, to honor the man whose spirit and story continue to haunt and inspire.

A Legacy of Innovation and Mystery

Born in New York City in 1823, Thomas Whaley made his way to San Diego in 1851 with dreams of success. His ambitious ventures ranged from property development to finance, all culminating in the construction of his renowned two-story Greek Revival-style brick house in 1857. With its multifaceted history as a courthouse, theater, and general store, the Whaley House is a testament to Whaley’s entrepreneurial spirit.

However, it’s not just Whaley’s business acumen that draws people to the house today—it’s the lingering presence of its former inhabitants and the eerie events witnessed by visitors over the years. From unexplained footsteps to fleeting apparitions, the Whaley House is a destination for both history buffs and paranormal enthusiasts seeking to experience a piece of America’s haunted heritage.

Join the Celebration!

Today, the Whaley House is operated by Old Town Trolley Tours of San Diego, which strives to preserve the building’s storied past while celebrating its legacy. “We are honored to be entrusted with this incredible piece of San Diego history,” says Victor Santana, Operations Manager of the Whaley House Museum. “Each year, we try to build on celebrating Thomas Whaley and the legacy he and his family left in San Diego. Once again, the County has shared some priceless Whaley family pieces for us to display during Thomas Whaley Days, which we are excited to share with the public.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to explore, learn, and maybe even come face-to-face with a spirit or two. Visit WhaleyHouseSanDiego.com for more details and to RSVP for the morning book talk. After all, how often do you get to celebrate a birthday with a ghost?
