California State Parks and the Boosters of Old Town invite you to step back in time and celebrate an old fashioned Fourth of July at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park! This family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity to experience Independence Day as early San Diego residents did in the 1800s, with a day full of games, crafts, live music, and more.
The celebration will take place on Thursday, July 4, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free, though some activities may require an additional purchase.
Activities
Flag Raising Ceremony: Kick off the festivities with a patriotic flag raising with Scout Troop 12 in the Plaza de Las Armas.
Opening Remarks: Hear from park staff and special guests as they welcome visitors.
Live Music: Enjoy performances at three different locations within the park:
- Plaza Stage
- Fiesta de Reyes
- Casa de Maria
Demonstrations:
- Spinning/Weaving
- Community Quilt: Contribute to a shared quilting project.
- Blacksmith: Watch live demonstrations of blacksmithing techniques.
- Archaeology: Learn about the historical digs and finds in Old Town.
Games for All Ages:
- Hoop Toss
- Coit
- Game of Graces
Craft Activities:
- Corn Husk Cloth Dolls: Create your own traditional dolls.
- Morse Code Bracelets: Make and take home a personalized bracelet.
Competitive Games:
- Watermelon Eating Contest
- Tug of War
- Sack Race
- Egg Race
- Wheelbarrow Races
- Marble Contest
