Barrio Donas expanded its selection of Mexican donuts as a pop-up in San Diego’s Old Town Urban Market, offering premium, handmade donuts on Saturdays and Sundays. And starting April 1, 2023, Barrio Donas will be available everyday! Co-founders Janet Martinez and Jonathan Garcia wanted to bring something new and exciting to the market and share their love of Mexican flavors and culture through their food.
Their donuts are made with high-quality ingredients and carefully crafted with traditional Mexican flavors like churro, abuelita, mazapan, jamaica, and arroz con leche. They also offer vegan and gluten-free options to ensure that everyone can enjoy their treats.
In addition to donuts, Barrio Donas also serves tamales made in banana leaves, fresh coffee, and horchata (which has been rated the best in California by Yelp). Their mission is to create a welcoming environment that brings people together through food, aligning perfectly with the Old Town Urban Market’s shared space philosophy.
“We believe that food is a way to bring people together and share culture,” Martinez says. “At Barrio Donas, we strive to create a ‘buena onda’, a shared space that welcomes one and all. Whether you’re craving café de olla cold brew or a maple bar, we have the best of both worlds!”
Due to their success, Barrio Donas has since gone full-time, offering a wider selection of handmade Mexican donuts and other traditional Mexican treats. The shop’s team is friendly and welcoming, and their passion for sharing their culture through food is evident in every bite.
