Reminder: Bazaar del Mundo’s Latin American Festival & Mata Ortiz Pottery Market

Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant art and culture of Latin America at Old Town’s Bazaar del Mundo Shops. The annual Latin American Festival & Mata Ortiz Pottery Market will take place from August 2-4, offering a unique chance to explore the rich traditions and stories of talented artists from across the region.

The Bazaar del Mundo Shops will transform into a bustling marketplace, showcasing a diverse array of genuine folk art, handwoven textiles, embroidered clothing, stunning jewelry, and meticulously crafted ceramic and clay pottery. Discover the artistry of master potter Jorge Quintana, renowned for his intricate Mata Ortiz pottery, a centuries-old art form that features delicately hand-painted geometric and ancestral symbols.

Witness live demonstrations by artists skilled in traditional crafts, including:

  • Jacobo and María Ángeles: Hand-carved wooden alebrijes, mythical animal spirit guides popularized by the film “Coco.”
  • Pedro and Diego Montaño: Oaxacan wool rugs woven on pedal looms, preserving Zapotecan culture.
  • Geraldo Ortega: Whimsical clay figurines created using the traditional Barro Betus technique.

Additional exhibits will include folk art and paintings by Silvia Berrios, Oaxacan embroidered clothing by Olayda Perez Ruiz and Esther Jimenez, and stunning jewelry by Peruvian designer Esteban Yanez.
